Develop & deliver effective and evidence-based customer experience solutions.

The Production Guide equips your teams with the permanent capacity to build customer-centered solutions that last.

What is human centered design production?

Human-centered production teams build, test, and ship products, services, programs, and systems that consciously center on human needs and wants. This contrasts with more rote production processes, which result in offerings that often wander from great CX in order to defer to technical or organizational demands.

This deference degrades the offering’s resonance with humans and creates compromises, tech debt, and brittle, complex processes that you and your teams can avoid from the starting block by using HCD.

To accomplish this, the HCD Production Guide shows your teams the complete production cycle from evidence to shippable solution.

The HCD Production Guide provides frameworks and methods for the production phase of human-centered design, where teams build or evolve products, services, and systems based on insights from completed discovery research.

Structured in two parts—Concepts explaining the "why" of production decisions, and Operations detailing step-by-step "how" processes—the Production Guide is comprehensive without being overwhelming, helping teams navigate the context of creating solutions and apply select methods to develop outcomes that are loveable, workable, and sustainable.

How is HCD Production better than other methodologies?

Where design thinking workshops hand you sticky notes and agency consultants hand you Figma files, the HCD Production Guide gives you the underlying logic of the production process itself. This is how your teams create workable, delightful products, services, programs, and systems in a systematic and teachable way.

The HCD Guides were researched and developed for federal teams at VA and CDC who had to make workable, wonderful solutions with realistic (sometimes non-existent) budgets and limited access to UX or Engineering talent. The Production Guide helps you work with the talent you have—not the talent you might have in a perfect world.

Why is the Production Guide crucial for my organization?

You're approving the production work and funding the teams, but you aren’t sure how to evaluate quality beyond "does it look nice?"

The HCD Production Guide's Concepts section gives you the intellectual framework to know whether your teams are following a sound process, so you can advocate for resources based on evidence, rather than hoping the output will justify the investment.

The HCD Production Guide's Operations section gives you the technical vocabulary to follow along with that process, so you can know what great work looks like.

How is the Production Guide organized?

The HCD Production Guide is written and organized in modular, interchangeable sections.

That means you and your teams don’t need to read straight through or follow this Guide step-by-step to build great products, services, programs, and/or systems. Instead, use the parts of the Guide necessary to your project and draw on your own in-house experience, talent, and SOPs to sail through the parts that are familiar to you.

HCD Production is systematic design & development.

The HCD Production Guide provides comprehensive customer experience production methodology for c-suite professionals leading solution development across internal and external teams.

This systematic framework guides teams from insights to implementation. It has been used by federal agencies including the CDC and VA, as well as in private sector organizations building products, services, and systems that are effective, workable, and sustainable.

“Human centered” versus “human-centered"

We know - both appear on our pages. “Human-centered” is our preferred spelling, as it is grammatically accurate, but we also appreciate that English is a dynamic language that lets people convey their meaning without being too fiddly about rules.

“Human centered”, it turns out, is how people search for the term most often on the internet, and, since we want people to find the one-of-a-kind HCD guidance that Ana so painstakingly researched and wrote down, we include both spellings prominently on our pages.
